Course Objective & Scope
Unlike exam-prep theory courses, day-to-day project work expects testers to spot gaps in user stories, verify not only the UI but also APIs and database state, and file bug reports developers can act on immediately. This course teaches software testing hands-on across a live web and API application.
It covers the Software Testing Life Cycle (STLC), functional and non-functional test types, writing test cases and acceptance criteria, session-based exploratory testing, browser DevTools inspection, REST API testing with Postman, backend data checks with SQL, and defect lifecycle management in Jira/TestRail. Participants produce a complete test suite and test summary report for a sample product module.
Who Should Attend?
- Junior QA/test specialists starting out or strengthening their hands-on testing skills
- Business analysts, product owners and support specialists running user acceptance tests (UAT)
- Team members looking for practical project skills rather than certification theory
- Prerequisite: familiarity with web applications; no programming experience required
Key Takeaways
- Derive positive, negative and boundary test cases from user stories and acceptance criteria
- Use browser DevTools (Network, Console, Storage) to separate frontend bugs from backend failures
- Test REST API endpoints, status codes and JSON payloads with Postman
- Verify that UI actions persist accurately in the database using SQL queries
- Write reproducible, evidence-backed defect reports with clear severity and priority
Curriculum
The Software Testing Life Cycle (STLC) and Test Types
- The tester's role in Agile/Scrum teams, Definition of Ready and Definition of Done
- Unit, integration, system, regression, smoke and user acceptance (UAT) testing
- Functional testing vs usability, compatibility and basic performance checks
Writing Test Cases and Exploratory Testing
- Deriving preconditions, test steps, test data and expected results from user stories
- Boundary conditions, negative paths and spotting edge cases
- Session-based exploratory testing charters and testing heuristics
Web Application Testing and Browser DevTools
- Testing forms, sessions/cookies, permissions and cross-browser behaviour
- Inspecting HTTP traffic and JavaScript errors with Chrome DevTools Network and Console tabs
API Testing with Postman and Database Checks with SQL
- REST fundamentals, sending GET/POST/PUT/DELETE requests in Postman and environment variables
- Checking status codes, response times and basic payload assertions
- Validating persisted database records after UI/API actions using SELECT and JOIN queries
Defect Management and Test Reporting
- Anatomy of an actionable bug report: reproduction steps, environment details and logs
- Severity vs Priority, root-cause follow-up and regression re-testing
- Test execution summary, traceability matrix and release Go/No-Go checklist
