Course Objective & Scope

ISTQB Foundation Level (CTFL) is the global benchmark for establishing a shared testing vocabulary and structured methodology across QA, business analysis and development teams. This programme covers every learning objective (K1, K2, K3) of the current ISTQB CTFL v4.0 syllabus through both real project examples and scenario-based question walkthroughs.

Topics include the fundamentals and 7 principles of testing, test levels and types across software development lifecycles (Agile, DevOps, sequential), static testing and formal reviews, black-box, white-box and experience-based test design techniques, managing test activities (estimation, risk, defect management), and test tooling. Each module concludes with K2/K3 practice questions.

Who Should Attend?

  • Software testers and QA engineers adopting the international ISTQB methodology and terminology
  • Business analysts, project managers and developers working closely with testing teams
  • Quality teams standardising testing language and practices across the organisation
  • Prerequisite: basic familiarity with the software development lifecycle

Key Takeaways

  • Distinguish errors (mistakes), defects (bugs) and failures, and apply the 7 testing principles
  • Position shift-left practices, TDD/ATDD/BDD, test levels and confirmation/regression testing in SDLC
  • Run effective static reviews across walkthrough, technical review and inspection formats
  • Solve K3-level problems in EP, BVA, decision tables, state transitions, and statement/branch coverage
  • Apply test planning, estimation techniques, testing quadrants and product/project risk management

Curriculum

Fundamentals of Testing (CTFL v4.0 Chapter 1)
  • What testing is, test objectives, and testing vs debugging
  • Errors, defects, failures, root causes and the 7 testing principles
  • Test activities, testware, traceability and the value of independent testing
Testing Throughout the Software Development Lifecycle (Chapter 2)
  • Testing in sequential, iterative and Agile/DevOps models, Shift-Left and TDD/ATDD/BDD
  • Test levels: Component, Component Integration, System, System Integration and Acceptance
  • Functional, non-functional, black-box, white-box, confirmation/regression and maintenance testing
Static Testing and the Review Process (Chapter 3)
  • Scope of static testing, static analysis and differences from dynamic testing
  • Early stakeholder feedback and the formal review process lifecycle
  • Review roles and review types: Informal, Walkthrough, Technical Review and Inspection
Test Analysis and Design Techniques (Chapter 4)
  • Black-box techniques: Equivalence Partitioning, Boundary Value Analysis, Decision Tables, State Transition (K3 exercises)
  • White-box techniques: Statement and Branch testing and coverage calculations
  • Experience-based techniques and collaborative user story / acceptance criteria writing
Managing the Test Activities and Test Tools (Chapters 5 & 6)
  • Test planning, entry/exit criteria, estimation (Wideband Delphi, Planning Poker, three-point, ratios)
  • Test pyramid, testing quadrants, product/project risk analysis, test monitoring and defect management
  • Benefits and risks of test automation and full CTFL v4.0 mock exam walkthrough
