Course Objective & Scope
A large share of severe production defects originate not in coding mistakes, but in incomplete, ambiguous or contradictory business requirements. Test analysis focuses on challenging requirements before code is written and applying systematic design techniques to achieve maximum defect coverage with the minimum number of test cases.
This course covers requirement reviews and ambiguity analysis, Three Amigos and Example Mapping, modelling acceptance criteria with Gherkin (Given/When/Then), equivalence partitioning (EP), boundary value analysis (BVA), decision tables, state transition diagrams, combinatorial/pairwise testing, and risk-based test prioritisation (FMEA/PRISMA). Participants turn a complex business specification into an optimised test design matrix.
Who Should Attend?
- Test analysts, senior QA specialists and business analysts shaping acceptance criteria
- Teams testing complex rule engines, financial/insurance/telecom workflows and integrations
- Test leads establishing requirement-to-test traceability and coverage optimisation
- Prerequisite: foundational experience in software testing or business analysis
Key Takeaways
- Uncover missing, ambiguous and conflicting rules in specifications before development starts
- Expose overlooked rule combinations using decision tables and state transition models
- Compress hundreds of parameter combinations into a manageable suite with pairwise testing
- Optimise tight testing windows using likelihood-and-impact Risk-Based Test Analysis (RBTA)
- Build a Requirements-Risk-Test Traceability Matrix (RTM) and reusable test analysis template
Curriculum
Static Testing, Requirement Reviews and Ambiguity Analysis
- The cost-of-defect curve and defect prevention during specification
- Requirement quality criteria (INVEST, SMART) and an ambiguity/conflict checklist
- Building shared understanding with Three Amigos, Example Mapping and BDD (Given-When-Then)
Data- and Rule-Driven Design: EP, BVA and Decision Tables
- Equivalence Partitioning and 2-value / 3-value Boundary Value Analysis (BVA)
- Constructing and collapsing Decision Tables for multi-condition business rules
- Spotting rule contradictions and unstated scenarios directly from the table
State- and Combination-Driven Design: State Transition and Pairwise
- State Transition diagrams, state-event tables and testing invalid transitions
- Pairwise (All-Pairs) and Orthogonal Array testing for multi-parameter forms and APIs
- Generating combinatorial test sets with tools such as PICT / ACTS
Process Flows, White-Box Awareness and Experience-Based Techniques
- Use Case and business-process testing across main, alternative and exception paths
- Statement/branch coverage awareness, Error Guessing and Checklist-based design
Risk-Based Test Analysis (RBTA) and Traceability
- Assessing product risk with technical likelihood and business impact matrices (PRISMA / FMEA)
- Matching test depth, design technique and regression scope to risk level
- Workshop: building a Traceability Matrix (RTM) and test analysis pack on an enterprise case
