Course Objective & Scope
Knowing the syntax of a single tool (Selenium, Cypress or Playwright) is rarely enough to keep an enterprise suite of hundreds of tests healthy. As suites grow, duplicated code, shared-data collisions, hour-long runs and noisy false positives can erode trust in automation altogether.
This course focuses on designing a sustainable test automation architecture and quality workflow. It covers deciding what to automate at which layer (unit, API, UI), Page Object, Component and Screenplay patterns, hybrid API + UI test design, test isolation for parallel runs, actionable reporting and flaky-test governance.
Who Should Attend?
- SDETs and senior automation engineers designing enterprise test automation frameworks
- QA and test leads responsible for automation strategy, tool selection and coding standards
- Development and testing teams struggling with slow or high-maintenance automation suites
- Prerequisite: foundational hands-on experience with at least one test automation tool
Key Takeaways
- Decide what to automate — and at which layer — using clear ROI and risk criteria
- Combine UI, API and database clients inside a clean, layered automation architecture
- Design atomic, self-contained tests that run safely in parallel without shared-state collisions
- Apply Test Data Builder, Object Mother and API state-seeding patterns
- Triage, quarantine and eliminate flaky tests while keeping CI feedback loops fast
Curriculum
Automation Strategy, ROI and Tool Evaluation
- Selecting automation candidates based on frequency, business risk, stability and maintenance cost
- Avoiding the ice-cream-cone anti-pattern by pushing assertions down to the API layer
- Structured PoC evaluation matrix for Selenium, Playwright, Cypress and Appium
Test Automation Design Patterns
- Limits of naive Page Objects, breaking up bloated pages and the Component Object pattern
- The Screenplay Pattern (Actors, Abilities, Tasks, Questions) and Fluent Interfaces
- Clean assertion helpers, configuration management and multi-environment support
Hybrid Automation (API + UI) and Test Data Architecture
- Generating collision-free domain data with Test Data Builders and Faker
- Seeding preconditions (users, carts, orders) via REST/GraphQL APIs before touching the UI
- Writing atomic, independent tests: eliminating shared static accounts and managing cleanup
Parallel Execution, Anti-Flake Engineering and Observability
- The 5 root causes of flakiness: async timing, shared state, environment drift, third parties and time/dates
- Disciplined retry policies, automated test quarantine and failure categorisation
- Attaching traces, HAR files, video and backend correlation IDs to speed up triage
CI/CD Integration, Maintenance Workflows and Governance
- Structuring smoke suites, fast PR checks and full regression pipelines
- Code review standards, linters and refactoring habits for test codebases
- Workshop: auditing an existing automation framework and drafting an improvement roadmap
