Course Objective & Scope
Relying on manual checks or brittle UI tests at the end of a sprint cannot keep pace with modern continuous delivery. Quality Engineering (QE) embeds quality across the entire software lifecycle, from requirement refinement all the way to production observability.
This comprehensive programme covers the test pyramid and testing trophy models, shift-left practices (example mapping, TDD/BDD, unit, integration and Pact contract testing) alongside shift-right practices (canary releases, synthetic monitoring, resilience checks), test environment and data management, and CI/CD quality gates (SonarQube, mutation testing). Participants produce a Quality Engineering maturity matrix and a tailored test strategy document.
Who Should Attend?
- QA/test engineers, SDETs and QA leads transforming quality practices
- Backend and frontend developers and tech leads integrating testing into daily delivery
- DevOps engineers and engineering managers accountable for release quality
- Prerequisite: foundational experience in software development or software testing
Key Takeaways
- Design a balanced test portfolio across unit, service, contract and UI layers
- Catch cross-service breaking changes before deployment with consumer-driven contract testing (Pact)
- Build deterministic test environments using Testcontainers, service virtualisation (WireMock) and synthetic data
- Embed static analysis, security, performance and test quality gates into CI/CD pipelines
- Track quality with flaky-test governance, defect escape rates and DORA metrics
Curriculum
From Traditional QA to Quality Engineering
- Distinguishing Quality Control (QC), Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Engineering (QE)
- Combining shift-left and shift-right practices in a Whole-Team Quality culture
- Test Pyramid, Testing Trophy and balancing test layers across microservices
Shift-Left: Code, Service and Contract Testing
- Example Mapping and writing testable acceptance criteria
- Unit test effectiveness, mutation testing (Pitest/Stryker) and Testcontainers integration
- Consumer-Driven Contract Testing with Pact and service virtualisation with WireMock
Test Data, Environments and CI/CD Quality Gates
- Test data strategies: masked data, synthetic data generation and state isolation
- Automated Quality Gate rules on pull requests and release branches
- Detecting, quarantining and fixing flaky tests alongside parallel execution
Non-Functional Quality and Shift-Right Practices
- Embedding continuous performance, accessibility and security checks into pipelines
- Feature flags, canary rollouts, synthetic monitoring in production and error budgets
- Pragmatic use of AI-assisted test generation and self-healing tools
Quality Metrics and the Enterprise QE Roadmap
- Looking beyond code coverage: Defect Escape Rate, MTTR and Change Failure Rate
- Workshop: building a Quality Engineering strategy and transformation checklist
