Course Objective & Scope
With its strict type system, enums, attributes and mature frameworks, modern PHP 8.x represents an engineering discipline far removed from legacy procedural PHP habits. This course is designed for teams modernising existing PHP codebases or building maintainable new web applications and APIs with Laravel or Symfony.
It covers PHP 8.2/8.3 language features, Composer and PSR standards, routing, controllers, FormRequest validation, the service container and dependency injection, data access and N+1 prevention with Eloquent ORM, Sanctum/JWT authentication, Redis queues, and automated testing with Pest/PHPUnit on an end-to-end sample application.
Who Should Attend?
- Developers building enterprise web applications, e-commerce platforms and APIs in PHP
- Teams migrating legacy or procedural PHP codebases to PHP 8 and a modern framework
- PHP team leads raising standards around code quality, static analysis and testing
- Prerequisite: basic PHP or web programming knowledge
Key Takeaways
- Use PHP 8 strict_types, union/intersection types, readonly classes and Enums effectively
- Integrate Composer, PSR-4 autoloading, PSR-12 coding style and PHPStan static analysis
- Structure clean layers in Laravel (or Symfony) with thin controllers, Action/Service classes and DTOs
- Optimise ORM queries, manage migrations and offload work to background Queues and Workers
- Prevent SQL injection, XSS and CSRF flaws and write feature tests with PHPUnit or Pest
Curriculum
Modern PHP 8.x, Composer and PSR Standards
- Strict types, constructor property promotion, readonly classes, Enums, Attributes and Match
- Composer package management, PSR-4 autoloading and PSR-7/12/15 standards
- Static analysis with PHPStan / Psalm and code formatting with Pint / PHP-CS-Fixer
Framework Architecture, Routing and Layered Design
- Request lifecycle, Service Container and Dependency Injection
- Routing, Middleware, FormRequest validation and API Resource transformers
- Keeping controllers and models lean with Action, Service and DTO layers
Data Access, ORM and Performance
- Migrations, Seeders, Eloquent (or Doctrine) relationships and transactions
- Preventing N+1 queries with eager loading, indexing and chunk/cursor iteration
- Query/application caching with Redis and background jobs with Queues/Horizon
Security, Authentication and External Integrations
- Session/cookie security, API token auth with Sanctum/OAuth2 and Gates/Policies
- OWASP defences: parameterised queries, XSS/CSRF protection and safe file uploads
- Resilient HTTP client calls, webhook handling and rate limiting
Automated Testing, Deployment and PHP-FPM/Octane
- Unit, HTTP/feature and database tests with PHPUnit and Pest
- Production tuning with PHP-FPM pools, OPcache, Laravel Octane and Docker
