Course Objective & Scope
The tension between shipping features quickly and keeping systems stable often leads either to frequent outages or overly cautious release freezes. This course introduces Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) practices that treat reliability as a measurable engineering problem.
Selecting user-centric SLIs and SLOs, error budget policies, burn-rate alerts, identifying and automating operational toil, resilience patterns, on-call incident command and writing blameless postmortems are practised on realistic service scenarios. Participants produce an SLO specification and a postmortem template for one of their own services.
Who Should Attend?
- SRE, DevOps and systems engineers responsible for service availability and production operations
- Backend and platform developers who own services in production
- Tech leads and IT managers balancing release velocity with stability
- Prerequisite: basic familiarity with distributed systems and application operations
Key Takeaways
- Select SLIs that reflect user journeys and set realistic SLO targets
- Separate real outage threats from noise using error budgets and burn-rate alerts
- Quantify operational toil and prioritise engineering work to eliminate it
- Improve service resilience with timeouts, retries with backoff, circuit breakers and load testing
- Run structured incident response and write blameless postmortems with tracked action items
