Course Objective & Scope

Granting CI servers direct `kubectl apply` credentials creates security risks and lets the live cluster state drift away from Git. This course teaches the pull-based GitOps model using Argo CD and Flux so that Git remains the single source of truth.

Application and environment repo structures, manifest generation with Kustomize and Helm, sync waves and hooks, managing sensitive data with SOPS, Sealed Secrets and External Secrets, multi-cluster fleet management with ApplicationSets and canary/blue-green rollouts with Argo Rollouts are practised hands-on. Participants leave with a GitOps repository template tailored to their organisation.

Who Should Attend?

  • DevOps, SRE and platform engineers automating Kubernetes deployments
  • Cloud architects designing multi-environment and multi-cluster platforms
  • Software teams looking to drive releases and rollbacks entirely through Git
  • Prerequisite: working knowledge of Kubernetes, Git and basic Helm/Kustomize

Key Takeaways

  • Draw clear boundaries between push-based CI pipelines and pull-based GitOps reconciliation
  • Install and configure Argo CD and Flux, including sync policies and self-healing
  • Separate dev, staging and production environments with Kustomize overlays and Helm values
  • Manage Kubernetes Secrets safely using Sealed Secrets, SOPS or External Secrets Operator
  • Automate multi-cluster fleets with ApplicationSets and canary releases with Argo Rollouts

Curriculum

GitOps Principles and Repository Architecture
  • The 4 OpenGitOps principles and decoupling CI from CD
  • Monorepo versus polyrepo, environment branches versus directory-per-environment
Application Lifecycle with Argo CD
  • Application and AppProject CRDs, RBAC and SSO
  • Auto-sync, prune, self-heal, sync waves and resource hooks
Flux v2 Architecture and Kustomize/Helm Integration
  • Source, Kustomization, HelmRelease and Image Automation controllers
  • Comparing Argo CD and Flux and selecting the right fit
Secrets in GitOps and Multi-Cluster Fleets (ApplicationSets)
  • External Secrets Operator, Sealed Secrets and Mozilla SOPS
  • The App-of-Apps pattern and ApplicationSet generators (Git, List, Cluster)
Progressive Delivery: Canary and Blue/Green with Argo Rollouts
  • Rollout CRDs, AnalysisTemplates and automated rollback on Prometheus metrics
  • Enterprise GitOps adoption and operations checklist
