Course Objective & Scope
Beyond architectural theory, building microservices in the .NET ecosystem requires combining service orchestration, messaging libraries, resilience policies and distributed tracing tools effectively. This hands-on course teaches how to code a production-grade multi-service application using the modern .NET 8/9 toolset.
It walks step by step through local orchestration and service defaults with .NET Aspire, API gateways with YARP, gRPC and HTTP/REST communication, event-driven messaging on RabbitMQ/Kafka with MassTransit, EF Core transactional outbox and saga state machines, resilience with Microsoft.Extensions.Http.Resilience (Polly v8), and observability with OpenTelemetry. Participants leave with a working multi-service reference solution.
Who Should Attend?
- .NET backend developers familiar with ASP.NET Core who are moving to multi-service architectures
- Software architects and team leads establishing the technical foundation for distributed .NET systems
- Product teams decomposing monolithic .NET solutions into services
- Prerequisite: C# and ASP.NET Core Web API development experience
Key Takeaways
- Spin up multiple services, containers and resources locally with .NET Aspire
- Configure reverse routing, auth forwarding and rate limiting with YARP
- Implement publish/consume, transactional outbox and state machine sagas with MassTransit
- Apply standard resilience pipelines (retry, circuit breaker, timeout) on gRPC and HttpClientFactory
- Trace and monitor .NET services end to end with OpenTelemetry, Prometheus and Grafana/Jaeger
Curriculum
.NET Microservices Solution Structure and .NET Aspire
- Per-service project/database layout and shared contract packages
- Local development orchestration with .NET Aspire AppHost and ServiceDefaults
- Centralised configuration, health checks and environment settings
YARP API Gateway and Synchronous Communication (HTTP & gRPC)
- Routing, load balancing, authentication and rate limiting with YARP
- Typed HttpClient and ASP.NET Core gRPC server/client implementation
- Retries, timeouts and circuit breakers with Microsoft.Extensions.Http.Resilience (Polly v8)
Asynchronous Messaging and Sagas with MassTransit
- MassTransit consumers, producers and message contracts on RabbitMQ/Kafka
- Preventing lost and duplicate messages with the EF Core Transactional Outbox
- Distributed saga orchestration with MassTransit State Machines
Distributed Security and Authentication
- Centralised authentication with Keycloak / Entra ID (OIDC/OAuth2)
- JWT validation and scope/claim authorisation from gateway to downstream services
Testcontainers, OpenTelemetry and Kubernetes Deployment
- Service integration testing with Testcontainers for .NET and WebApplicationFactory
- Collecting distributed traces, metrics and structured logs with OpenTelemetry
- Chiseled/rootless .NET Docker images and Kubernetes/Helm deployment templates
