Course Objective & Scope
When product teams wait weeks on ops tickets to provision a database or must master a dozen infrastructure tools just to ship a service, delivery grinds to a halt. This programme teaches how to design and run a self-service Internal Developer Platform (IDP) treated as an internal product.
Platform-as-a-Product thinking, Team Topologies and cognitive load analysis, golden path (paved road) templates, software catalogues and scaffolding in Backstage, and control planes built with Crossplane and Argo CD are covered through hands-on labs. Participants design an IDP roadmap and a sample golden path for their organisation.
Who Should Attend?
- Platform and senior DevOps engineers building an Internal Developer Platform (IDP)
- Software and cloud architects responsible for Developer Experience (DevEx) and standard architectures
- Engineering managers and tech leads driving engineering productivity
- Prerequisite: practical experience with Kubernetes, IaC and CI/CD pipelines
Key Takeaways
- Transition from ticket-driven ops to a product-minded platform engineering model
- Design golden path templates that lower developer cognitive load without blocking flexibility
- Set up a service catalogue, TechDocs and self-service software templates in Backstage
- Expose cloud and cluster resources behind clean abstractions using Crossplane or Terraform
- Measure platform adoption and impact using DORA, SPACE and DevEx metrics
Curriculum
Platform as a Product and Team Topologies
- Developer cognitive load and interactions between stream-aligned and platform teams
- User research, internal developer personas and the Thinnest Viable Platform (TVP)
Golden Path Design and Standardisation
- Building paved roads rather than rigid cages
- Bundling microservice scaffolding, CI/CD, observability and security defaults
Internal Developer Portals with Backstage
- Software Catalog, System/Component/API entity model and ownership tracking
- Using Software Templates (Scaffolder) to spin up repos and pipelines in minutes
Control Planes: Crossplane, IaC and GitOps Orchestration
- Exposing cloud resources as Kubernetes APIs via Crossplane XRs and Compositions
- Safe self-service provisioning with Argo CD, Terraform and Policy-as-Code
Measuring Developer Experience (DevEx) and Roadmapping
- DORA, SPACE, time-to-first-commit and platform NPS metrics
- Enterprise IDP maturity assessment and architecture workshop
