Course Objective & Scope
Attempts to rewrite legacy monoliths that hold critical business rules from scratch often end in slipping schedules and continuity risks. This programme covers how to modernise live production systems incrementally and pay down technical debt in a controlled way.
Topics include mapping existing architecture and dependencies, wrapping untested code in characterization and approval tests, branch by abstraction, the strangler fig pattern, anti-corruption layers (ACL), and splitting shared databases using dual writes and CDC. Participants build a risk matrix and a phased modernisation roadmap for a legacy module from their own organisation.
Who Should Attend?
- Senior developers maintaining and transforming long-running enterprise applications
- Software and solution architects leading modernisation and cloud migration initiatives
- Engineering managers prioritising technical debt and platform renewal
Key Takeaways
- Make evidence-based choices between rewrite, refactoring, replatforming and strangler approaches
- Build a characterization test safety net to change untested legacy code safely
- Isolate new services from legacy data and domain models using an anti-corruption layer
- Split shared monolithic databases into new schemas without service interruption
- Put together a phased migration, feature-flag and rollback plan
Curriculum
Legacy Assessment and Modernization Strategies
- Technical debt inventory, code hotspots and dependency analysis
- The 7R decision framework: comparing retain, refactor, replatform and rebuild
- Prioritising modules by business impact and technical risk
Building a Safety Net: Characterization Tests and Seams
- Pinning current behaviour with golden master / approval testing
- Breaking tight couplings, seam points and sprout/wrap methods
- Incremental replacement inside live code with branch by abstraction
Strangler Fig and Anti-Corruption Layers
- Gradually routing endpoints through a proxy or API gateway
- Preventing legacy models from leaking into the new domain with an ACL
- Shadow traffic, canary releases and parallel-run verification
Database Decomposition and Integration Migration
- Untangling shared tables, stored procedures and foreign-key dependencies
- Expand-contract schema migrations, dual writes and Debezium/CDC sync
- Turning batch jobs and file-based integrations into services
Modernization Roadmap Workshop
- Drafting target architecture and migration phases on an organisational case
- Success metrics, observability and a decommissioning checklist
