Course Objective & Scope
The real power of workflow automation begins where pre-built app connectors end. Internal applications, local ERP/HR systems and modern AI APIs often require custom HTTP requests and webhooks. This course equips technical analysts and automation builders to read API documentation and integrate any REST service confidently.
Working with API clients and HTTP Request/Webhook nodes, participants practice authentication flows, nested JSON parsing, pagination and rate-limit handling on live endpoints.
Who Should Attend?
- Business analysts, systems analysts and technical operations specialists
- Automation builders using n8n, Power Automate, Make or Zapier
- IT teams connecting internal services with SaaS tools and AI APIs
- Prerequisite: basic workflow automation experience; full software engineering is not required
Key Takeaways
- Read OpenAPI/Swagger docs to configure endpoints, HTTP methods, headers and payloads
- Set up API Key, Bearer Token and OAuth 2.0 authentication securely
- Replace polling with real-time webhooks and verify webhook signatures
- Parse nested JSON arrays and transform payloads to match target schemas
- Handle pagination and HTTP 429 rate limits without dropping records
Curriculum
REST API Anatomy and Reading Documentation
- Endpoints, query parameters, headers, JSON bodies and HTTP methods (GET, POST, PATCH, DELETE)
- Interpreting HTTP status codes (2xx, 400, 401, 403, 404, 429, 5xx)
Authentication and Secret Management
- API Keys, Basic Auth, Bearer JWTs and OAuth 2.0 token refresh flows
- Storing credentials in secure vaults rather than hardcoding them in flows
Webhooks and Event-Driven Triggers
- Setting up webhook listeners, test vs production URLs and returning fast 200 OK responses
- Validating webhook authenticity with secret headers and HMAC signatures
JSON Transformation, Looping and Pagination
- Flattening, filtering and merging nested JSON arrays
- Handling cursor and offset pagination and batching requests
Calling LLM APIs Directly and Resilient Requests
- Invoking OpenAI, Anthropic or internal model endpoints via raw HTTP
- Configuring timeouts, respecting Retry-After headers and using idempotency keys
