Course Objective & Scope

In banking, insurance, telecom and enterprise systems, mission-critical business logic is often locked inside undocumented COBOL programs, massive PL/SQL packages or ageing monoliths—and naive line-by-line LLM translation silently breaks edge cases. This course teaches an evidence-backed modernisation methodology that uses AI first for comprehension and parity testing, and then for incremental transformation.

Static dependency graphs, business-rule extraction into human-readable specs, golden-master and dual-run parity harnesses, Strangler Fig seam selection, and semantic migration to idiomatic modern stacks (Java/Kotlin, C#, Go, Python) are practised on realistic legacy workloads.

Who Should Attend?

  • Enterprise and solution architects
  • Senior software and database engineers leading legacy modernisation initiatives
  • Teams migrating mainframe COBOL, PL/SQL, legacy Java EE or .NET Framework systems
  • Prerequisite: experience with enterprise application architecture and at least one modern backend language

Key Takeaways

  • Extract verifiable business-rule specifications from undocumented COBOL, PL/SQL or monolithic code
  • Map hidden couplings across shared tables, stored procedures and batch jobs
  • Build golden-master and numerical-precision parity test harnesses before migrating any logic
  • Translate legacy logic into idiomatic modern domain services rather than brittle syntax clones
  • Plan zero-downtime incremental cutovers using the Strangler Fig pattern and shadow traffic

Curriculum

Why Line-by-Line AI Translation Fails in Legacy Modernisation
  • Avoiding the 'JOBOL' syntax-clone trap: specification extraction before re-implementation
  • Pitfalls specific to COBOL copybooks, JCL batch jobs, PL/SQL packages and monoliths
Code Archaeology: Dependency Mapping and Business-Rule Extraction
  • Visualising call graphs, shared tables and data lineage with static analysis + LLMs
  • Distilling procedural code into decision tables, state machines and domain specs
Parity Assurance: Golden-Master and Dual-Run Harnesses
  • Building anonymised I/O test vectors and fixed-point decimal (COMP-3) precision checks
  • Shadow/differential testing harnesses that compare legacy and modern outputs automatically
Strangler Fig Decomposition and Semantic Migration
  • Selecting low-coupling, high-value architectural seams
  • Moving PL/SQL business rules and monolith modules into clean, idiomatic modern services
Incremental Cutover, Rollback and Sign-Off
  • Data synchronisation (CDC), progressive traffic shifting and instant rollback playbooks
  • Acceptance checklist covering parity metrics, performance and maintainability
