Course Objective & Scope
Features built through ad-hoc chat prompts vanish when the session closes, leaving no durable record of intended behaviour or invariants. Spec-Driven Development (SDD) elevates structured specifications to the primary engineering artifact and uses coding agents to compile those specs into verified implementation and tests.
Authoring layered SPEC.md documents, defining unambiguous contracts with OpenAPI, JSON Schema and TypeSpec, modelling state transitions, generating acceptance and contract tests directly from the spec before implementation, and maintaining spec-to-code synchronisation are practised hands-on.
Who Should Attend?
- Software engineers, senior developers and software architects
- Tech leads and technical product managers
- Engineering teams seeking predictable, auditable output from coding agents
- Prerequisite: experience in software design, API development and automated testing
Key Takeaways
- Author complete
SPEC.mddocuments covering scope, data models, contracts, invariants and non-goals - Eliminate ambiguity using OpenAPI, JSON Schema, TypeSpec and explicit state-machine definitions
- Generate executable contract and acceptance tests from the specification before implementation code
- Decompose a specification into ordered, verifiable execution checklists for coding agents
- Evolve software by editing the spec first and propagating spec diffs cleanly into code and tests
Curriculum
Prompt-First vs. Spec-Driven Development
- Why ephemeral chat logs fail as an engineering system of record
- Anatomy of a great spec: context, non-goals, data models, state transitions and invariants
Schema- and Contract-First Specifications
- Leaving zero room for hallucination with OpenAPI, JSON Schema, TypeSpec and DB schemas
- Specifying state machines, error taxonomies and idempotency guarantees explicitly
Co-Authoring and Stress-Testing Specs with AI
- Using LLMs to challenge draft specs for contradictions, security gaps and missing edge cases
- The Spec Review workflow: catching architectural flaws ten times faster than in code diffs
Compiling Specs into Tests and Implementation Plans
- Generating executable acceptance and contract tests directly from spec clauses
- Running the
SPEC.md→PLAN.md→ verified implementation loop with coding agents
Living Specifications and Spec-Diff Evolution
- Updating the specification first when requirements change and propagating the diff
- Automated PR checks to prevent implementation from drifting away from the spec
