Course Objective & Scope

Many teams use Redis only as a basic GET/SET string cache, missing how its single-threaded event loop and rich native data structures can solve sub-millisecond backend challenges ranging from leaderboards and rate limiters to distributed locks and persistent event streams.

This course covers all core Redis data types and their memory encodings, caching architectures (cache-aside, write-through, stampede prevention, TTL jitter), pipelining, transactions and atomic Lua scripts, Redis Streams with consumer groups, RDB/AOF persistence, memory eviction policies, and high availability with Sentinel and Redis Cluster.

Who Should Attend?

  • Backend developers reducing API latency and offloading primary databases on high-traffic services
  • Software architects designing real-time session stores, queues, rate limiters and caching tiers
  • DevOps, SRE and database engineers operating Redis (or Valkey) clusters in production
  • Prerequisite: backend application development experience in any programming language

Key Takeaways

  • Pick the right Redis structure — String, Hash, Set, Sorted Set, Bitmap, HyperLogLog or Stream — for each use case
  • Implement cache-aside, negative caching, TTL jitter and stampede (thundering herd) protection
  • Eliminate network round-trips and race conditions using pipelining and atomic server-side Lua scripts
  • Build production-grade sliding-window rate limiters, real-time leaderboards and distributed locks
  • Manage memory eviction policies, BigKey/HotKey bottlenecks, RDB/AOF durability and Redis Cluster hash slots

Curriculum

Redis Architecture, Core and Probabilistic Data Structures
  • The single-threaded event loop, I/O multiplexing and why O(n) commands like KEYS * stall production
  • Time complexity and memory encodings of Strings, Hashes, Lists, Sets and Sorted Sets (ZSET)
  • Bitmaps, HyperLogLog cardinality estimation and Geospatial indexing
Enterprise Caching Patterns and Consistency
  • Cache-Aside, Read-Through, Write-Through and Write-Behind strategies
  • Defending against Cache Stampede (Thundering Herd), Cache Penetration (Bloom filters / null caching) and Avalanche (TTL jitter)
  • Cache invalidation patterns and Redis Client-Side Caching
Atomicity, Lua Scripting and Real-Time Backend Patterns
  • Cutting RTT with Pipelining, optimistic locking with MULTI/EXEC/WATCH and atomic Lua scripts (EVAL)
  • Coding Token Bucket and Sorted-Set Sliding Window Rate Limiters
  • Distributed locks with SET NX PX (and Redlock trade-offs) plus API idempotency keys
Pub/Sub, Job Queues and Redis Streams
  • Comparing fire-and-forget Pub/Sub with durable Redis Streams
  • Redis Streams in action: XADD, XREADGROUP, Consumer Groups, Pending Entries List (PEL) and crash recovery
Production Operations: Persistence, Memory, Sentinel and Cluster
  • RDB snapshots, AOF (Append-Only File) fsync modes and hybrid persistence
  • maxmemory eviction policies (allkeys-lru, volatile-lfu), hunting BigKeys/HotKeys and reading SLOWLOG
  • High availability with Redis Sentinel and horizontal sharding with Redis Cluster (16,384 hash slots and {hash tags})
