Course Objective & Scope

The 'it works on my machine' problem happens when dependencies and runtime settings drift between environments. This course teaches how to use Docker to package applications as portable, lightweight and reproducible container images.

Linux namespaces and cgroups basics, the container lifecycle, multi-stage Dockerfiles that maximise layer caching, running as non-root, volumes and bridge networks, and running multi-tier stacks with Docker Compose are practised hands-on. Participants turn one of their own services into a production-ready Dockerfile and Compose template.

Who Should Attend?

  • Software developers who want to package their applications as containers
  • DevOps and system engineers standardising development and deployment environments
  • QA and automation engineers spinning up repeatable test environments
  • Prerequisite: basic command-line familiarity

Key Takeaways

  • Explain how containers differ from virtual machines and how image layers work
  • Write small, fast Dockerfiles using multi-stage builds and minimal base images
  • Configure persistent data and service networking with volumes, bind mounts and custom networks
  • Run application, database and cache services together with Docker Compose
  • Inspect runtime issues using container logs, healthchecks and resource limits

Curriculum

Container Architecture and Docker Essentials
  • Namespaces, cgroups and OCI standards
  • Docker Engine, the CLI and container lifecycle commands
Image Layers and Multi-Stage Dockerfiles
  • Using FROM, RUN, COPY, ENV, ENTRYPOINT and CMD
  • Layer caching, .dockerignore and slimming images with multi-stage builds
  • Distroless/Alpine base images and non-root users
Data Persistence and Docker Networking
  • Using volumes, bind mounts and tmpfs
  • Bridge, host and none networks, plus DNS-based service discovery
Multi-Service Applications with Docker Compose
