Course Objective & Scope

Thanks to its speed, automatic OpenAPI documentation and type safety, FastAPI has become the standard framework for modern Python microservices and AI application backends. Unlike courses focused solely on wrapping a model endpoint, this programme teaches how to architect a complete backend application including database persistence, authentication, Dependency Injection and clean project structure.

Participants build a layered (router, service, repository) application, wire up Pydantic v2 schemas and async SQLAlchemy/PostgreSQL sessions, implement OAuth2/JWT security, middleware and BackgroundTasks, and write automated test suites. Teams leave with a production-ready FastAPI project template and Dockerfile.

Who Should Attend?

  • Software and AI engineers building application backends for AI and data products
  • Developers transitioning from Flask or Django to modern async Python services
  • Data scientists turning prototypes into full-featured services with persistence and auth
  • Prerequisite: basic Python programming and familiarity with SQL/database concepts

Key Takeaways

  • Structure a maintainable FastAPI project using APIRouter, layered architecture and Pydantic v2
  • Use Dependency Injection (Depends) for database sessions, configuration and access control
  • Manage relational database operations and schema migrations with async SQLAlchemy and Alembic
  • Secure APIs with OAuth2, JWT tokens, CORS policies and custom middleware
  • Write fast integration tests in pytest using dependency_overrides and async test clients

Curriculum

FastAPI Architecture, Routing and Pydantic v2
  • ASGI/Starlette foundations, path/query/header parameters and modular layouts with APIRouter
  • Pydantic v2 models, custom field_validator rules, pydantic-settings and response models
Dependency Injection and Application Lifecycle
  • Reusable dependencies with Depends, resource cleanup via yield and sub-dependencies
  • lifespan events, custom exception handlers and standardised error payloads
Database Integration (Async SQLAlchemy) and Migrations
  • SQLAlchemy 2.0 async engine, session management and the CRUD repository pattern
  • Schema versioning with Alembic and connection pool tuning
Security, Middleware and Background Processing
  • OAuth2 Password/Bearer flows, JWT issuing/verification and role-based access control
  • CORS, request timing/logging middleware, WebSockets and BackgroundTasks
Testing and Containerised Deployment
  • Isolated integration tests using pytest, httpx.AsyncClient and app.dependency_overrides
  • Production Uvicorn/Gunicorn configuration and multi-container setup with Docker Compose
