Course Objective & Scope
As AI initiatives multiply, senior leadership needs a disciplined forum to decide which projects to scale, which to stop and which risks to accept. Without clear design, however, steering committees quickly degenerate into lengthy status-update meetings that delay delivery without improving governance.
This course shows how to design and run an evidence-based AI Steering Committee for portfolio oversight, staged funding and regulatory/ethical escalation. Participants draft a committee charter, PoC–pilot–scale gate checklists and a one-page executive decision-support dashboard template.
Who Should Attend?
- Chairs and members of the AI Steering Committee
- CIOs, CDOs, CTOs, CFOs, CISOs and legal/compliance directors
- PMO, strategy and AI CoE leaders running the committee secretariat
- Senior executives reporting on AI initiatives to the board
Key Takeaways
- Draft an AI Steering Committee charter defining membership, voting rights and operating cadence
- Set risk-tiered triage rules that determine which initiatives require committee sign-off
- Define objective go/pivot/kill stage-gate criteria across discovery, pilot and production scale
- Design decision-oriented one-page briefs and portfolio dashboards instead of passive status decks
- Operate clear escalation protocols for AI incidents, cost overruns and EU AI Act/KVKK compliance issues
Curriculum
Role, Composition and Charter of the AI Steering Committee
- Mandate boundaries between the board, executive committee, AI Steering Committee and AI CoE
- Ideal committee composition across business, technology, finance, security, legal and HR
- Escaping the status-meeting trap: decision-driven agendas and voting rules
Risk-Tiered Triage and Stage-Gate Governance
- Green, amber and red lanes: maintaining speed without routing every project to the committee
- Gate 1 (Problem & Data), Gate 2 (Pilot & Eval Evidence), Gate 3 (Go-Live & Security Sign-Off)
- Applying objective kill criteria to stop zombie pilots and reallocate funding
Decision-Support Pack and Portfolio Dashboard Design
- Standard one-page project decision brief (value, TCO, eval scores, residual risks)
- Eight core portfolio metrics: realised ROI, adoption, token spend, open risk items
- Translating technical evaluation metrics into executive decision indicators
Escalation, Incident Response and Regulatory Oversight
- Tracking EU AI Act high-risk obligations, KVKK compliance and ISO/IEC 42001 controls
- Escalation workflow for severe hallucination incidents, data leaks or rogue agent actions
- Formal risk acceptance, conditional approvals and audit trail documentation
Simulation: Live AI Steering Committee Session
- Role-play on realistic dossiers (one scale request, one budget overrun, one high-risk agent)
- Making Go / Pivot / Kill decisions and recording conditional sign-offs
- Finalising the organisation's own AI Steering Committee charter and inaugural agenda
